Chapter 31

HE WALKED IN THE SHADOWS, calmly and deliberately, knowing it was impossible for him to be seen. He kept his face hidden beneath the brim of his hat. He always dressed in dark clothes. His knife moved against his ribs as he walked. It kept perfect rhythm with his movements as if they were in sync.

The kill would be quick this time. Today, he would only take what he needed. He would prove to his mother that he was the one in control.

HUTCH WAS EXHAUSTED, mentally and physically. Just the thought of sleep was a luxury right now. It seemed like years since she’d had a good night’s sleep. The car hummed hypnotically, and she settled into it more comfortably. She felt under a spell right now and drifted off to sleep.

She forced herself awake once more. Mike replied, “Go to sleep if you want. I will wake you up when we get there.”

She shook her head, “No, I have to stay awake and get a feeling for this guy. Maybe watching the scenery will help me get better insight into him. He had to come this way. I won’t be able to get any rest until he is stopped.”

She looked out the window at the all too familiar sights. The first light of morning broke over the bayou. The sky was alive with various colors of pinks, grays and oranges. God could not have created a more breathtaking sunrise. If she weren't going to another murder scene she probably would find joy in watching it.

She looked at the foliage and saw the leaves changing color dramatically. Fall would soon be here. Soon this land would be scarred and naked with winter, but for now, it was breathtaking with the colors of autumn. The window to enjoy the colors of fall was short lived, and fall was normally one of her favorite seasons. Maybe she and Mike could take a ride to Virginia and enjoy the fall colors there. It would be a nice break or better yet, they could rent a little cabin on the Blue Ridge Parkway and enjoy the peace and quiet it had to offer. She didn’t need a long vacation, just a couple of days away.

As they got closer to the crime scene, she felt her insides tighten. His presence still lingered here. The air was charged with his negative energy. The consuming power of his presence overwhelmed her suddenly. She told Mike, “He will be in the crowd. We aren’t even there yet, and I sense him close by.” By the time they arrived at the crime scene, her senses were on fire. She looked around to see if she could pick up on his location. Not seeing anything, she let out a sigh. He was nearby.

She turned her attention toward the actual crime scene. She still couldn’t get over how exact her visions were. Everything was just how she saw it. The sun made its way further up in the sky, giving the area an eerie feel as the fog rose from the bayou.
